Silesian Nationality in
National Population and Housing Census 2002
in Poland
In reference to the question number 33 concernig individual's nationality to be asked during the National Population and Housing Census 2002 in Poland we want to inform that the Chairman of the Central Statistical Office (Glowny Urzad Statystyczny-GUS) Mr. Tadeusz Toczynski assured us in his letter that Silesian nationality will be accepted if declared by the asked. Additionally in an instruction distributed among regional branches of GUS we can read that "reckoners must not suggest an answer to the asked".
Meanwhile, we have been informed that during their trainings reckoners are induced to change the answer when Silesian nationality is declared into Polish, or to suggest not to declare it. Such practises have been recorded in many municipalities where reckoners are being trained, e.g. in Chrzastowice near Opole, Piekary Slaskie, Myslowice, etc. in Wojewodztwo Slaskie.
Silesian Autonomy Movement consider such practises as very dangerous, of which main objective is to confuse Silesians whether they may or not declare Silesian nationality during census.
Such practises cannot be accepted in a democratic state with aspirations for a membership in the EU. We demand that the Polish authorities react promptly and peremptorily to this very awkward and dangerous situation.
We ask all of you: EFA Bureau, EFA/Green MEPs, EFA member-parties and other friends to give us your support, to publicize this problem and to demand official explanations from Polish officials:
